Dutch Masters in the Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is a Dutch national museum in Amsterdam. It has one of the largest and most important art collections in the world. The Night Watch, a painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, is one of the most iconic paintings in the history of art. The painting was commissioned for a group called “The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch” who were known as “The Night Watch” because they would meet at night to train before going off to battle.

It depicts a moment from the Bible when Jesus told his disciples to stay awake while he prayed at Gethsemane. Jan Steen’s Merry Company at Table is one of the most popular paintings in the National Gallery. It depicts a group of peasants from Holland around a table enjoying food, drink and conversation. The painting was created in 1660 to celebrate Jan Steen’s return from Italy where he studied Renaissance art techniques which can be seen in his use of perspective and light/shadows to create depth within the composition.
