Art News: 5 Must-See Shows to Make Your Summer Great

It’s summertime, and for many of us that means time to take a break from the day-to-day routine. For some it will be taking a vacation, while others may just want to relax at home. If you’re looking for something new and exciting to do this summer, check out these must-see art exhibits in Chicago! 

The Field Museum has an exhibit called “Birds” showcasing 300 different bird species with paintings by John James Audubon. The Art Institute of Chicago is hosting “Picasso: Painting as Sculpture,” which displays Picasso’s work from all stages of his career. The art blog is all about the latest in art, from paintings to sculptures. We showcase up and coming artists as well as established ones. Summer is coming to a close, and that means it’s time to get ready for the fall. Luckily there are plenty of shows happening around NYC this September that will make your life easier in the last few weeks of summer. Here are five must-see shows to make your summer great:-

1. The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York

The Whitney Museum of American Art is in New York City’s Meatpacking District. It was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptor and art patron, to honor the memory of her late husband. The museum now holds more than 20,000 paintings and sculptures as well as drawings, prints, photographs and design objects. The building itself is an example of neo-expressionist architecture with its use of bold colors and geometric shapes juxtaposed next to each other. 

It’s an amazing museum because it showcases how diverse and influential American artists are, as well as their artistic styles and techniques. The Whitney has a large collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, installation pieces and video works from 1900 to our current day. 

The museum has been open for over 50 years now and houses one of the most diverse collections in America which continues to grow from donations from artists all around the world. 

Today, it has 6 locations: The main building at 450 Madison Avenue; a downtown branch on Governors Island; two satellite branches in Queens; the Breuer Building at 945 Madison Avenue; and an exhibition space called “The Met Breuer” which opened to the public November 18th 2016. This museum holds some of America’s greatest artwork including pieces by Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper and Walt Whitman among many others.

2. The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa

As a self-proclaimed art lover, you may be surprised to hear that the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa is my least favorite cultural institution. I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t appreciate Canadian artwork or if the gallery itself just isn’t doing anything for me. Either way, when I visit Ottawa this summer, I’ll probably skip over it and go straight to Parliament Hill!

The National Gallery of Canada is one of the largest and most important art galleries in North America. It was established by an Act of Parliament on July 1, 1880, with a mandate “to advance public education in arts and sciences” as well as to be “the national institution for the collection, conservation and presentation to the public of works that represent Canadian history.”

A tour of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa is a visit to Canada’s history and culture. The gallery contains over 40,000 works including art from Aboriginal Canadians, Inuit artists, modern Canadian painters such as Emily Carr and Tom Thomson and contemporary sculptures by Henry Moore. It also houses some significant international collections such as African Art which includes 6000 objects from across Africa; European paintings which include masterpieces by Titian, Rubens, El Greco and Goya; textiles that were collected during the reigns of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and Victoria (1837-1901).

This gallery includes pieces from different eras and continents, with many famous artists represented such as Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin and Dali. Visitors can enjoy various exhibitions throughout the year including travelling shows in conjunction with other museums around the world. There are also educational tours led by knowledgeable interpreters who provide insight into each artwork’s significance. The National Gallery of Canada is an excellent opportunity to explore visual culture while enjoying beautiful works of art!

3. Denver Art Museum

The Denver Art Museum is a state-of-the-art museum, with more than 70,000 square feet of exhibition space. It houses the most extensive collection of American Indian art in the world and has an impressive Egyptian collection as well. The galleries are full of rotating exhibitions and permanent pieces from some of your favorite artists like Jackson Pollock or Claude Monet. 

There are also special exhibits that you won’t want to miss like “Birds: A Century of Flight” which will be on display until January 7th. And if you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, head over to their website where they have a list of family friendly events happening through November 18th!

This Museum was established as a private organization for “the acquisition and exhibition of contemporary and classical art.” The permanent collection includes more than 40,000 works that span the history of modern and contemporary art from around the world. In addition to its exhibitions, it also provides educational programming for adults and children, along with docent-led tours by appointment. 

It has been recognized as one of America’s top 10 museums by Forbes Traveler magazine. As well as being ranked among TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Museums in North America.

With its recent expansion project completed, it now encompasses more than 170 galleries including free public spaces for all visitors like the North Building’s contemporary hall and outdoor sculpture gardens.

4. Royal Ontario Museum

The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the largest museums in North America and has been a staple in Toronto since it opened its doors on Sept. 19, 1914. The museum houses over 13 million artifacts and specimens from Canada and around the world. It also has interactive exhibits that are great for kids to learn more about their city’s history.

The ROM has more than six million items documenting human history from around the world, including iconic pieces like the Egyptian mummies and King Tutankhamen’s golden burial mask. Explore ancient cultures through artifacts or watch an educational IMAX movie about dinosaurs. There are also interactive exhibits for kids to enjoy, like a touchable moon rock that will teach them about space exploration!

Today this museum houses over 6 million objects spanning art and culture from many different parts of the globe. It has one of North America’s biggest archaeological collections with 8 million items representing ancient civilizations like Greece, Egypt and Mesopotamia that have been collected since the 1860s when they came under British control during colonial times up until now. 

5. Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. is a museum of American art that has been open to the public since 2012. It exhibits works from the 19th and 20th centuries by American artists such as John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins, and Georgia O’Keeffe.In 2006 ground was broken for what would be called Building 19-Renwick Gallery because it replicated the original design faithfully with modern materials and technology so much so that visitors will notice there are no visible seams or joints where its new walls meet old ones!

Some famous artists include: Thomas Hart Benton, George Bellows, James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Norman Rockwell just to name a few! This hidden gem also offers free admission on Fridays after 3pm which makes it an excellent place for families with young children who are looking for some culture and don’t want to spend a fortune on tickets.

The gallery was commissioned by James Renwick Jr., an architect of New York City’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, to house his personal art collection. His son donated the building to the Smithsonian in 1933, and it opened its doors as America’s national museum of crafts in 1940 with a mission “to foster creativity and innovation through excellence.”
