How designers can change our future: interview with Marina Vapelyaeva
“Design is a potent tool which can be used to shape reality,” says visionary Russian designer and educator Marina Vasilyeva in her recent TED talk on design for good. She shares how she’s using design to create innovative solutions for social problems in Russia, teaching students at RISD that “design education should not only focus on aesthetics.”
Marina Vaptelyanya studied architecture before turning to industrial design as a way to become more socially conscious. In her current work with RISD, she’s teaching students that “design education should not only focus on aesthetics.” Her talk shares how the power of design can be used for good and what designers need in order to achieve this goal.
Design is everywhere and it’s changing the world
We create our own worlds through design, whether it’s an interior space or a website we’re designing for someone else to visit online. If you take this idea of “designing” with imagination into other areas in life, then everything becomes possible: all limitations are lifted; there will be no more boundaries on what can be achieved due to age, gender, race or socio-economic status.
This isn’t just about making things beautiful, this is about creating spaces that allow people not only to survive but also thrive by doing less work while accomplishing more within their day or week.
How Do They Change It?
People have always been adapting and changing to the world around them. Designers are no different, we just do it through creativity rather than evolution, which is why design is so important for our society’s future.
Designers change things by making ideas visual in a way that can be communicated or understood quickly and efficiently; they’re able to find new solutions to old problems by asking “why?” within creative constraints (and not accepting the first answer).
When designers work together with other professionals who share their same thirst for innovation then phenomenal results happen because what was once thought of as impossible becomes possible at an unprecedented rate: think about how smartphones have changed communications over the past decade alone! How did this happen? A designer made it happen.
How Can You Help?
You can help by getting involved in the world of design and making it your own. How do you do this? Read, watch great designers speak at conferences like TED or SXSW research new products for purchase before buying them to see what’s out there on the market today; go visit a museum or library to get inspired from other people who have gone before you into the world of design. If you’re still not sure where to start then contact someone in your network family member, friend, colleague and ask them “what would I need to know about becoming an industrial designer?” They’ll be happy to answer all your questions because they want that too: more innovation in their life through understanding how we use our creativity to change the world.
